Как так вышло, что "этаж" заимствован из французского?
Как так вышло, что "этаж" заимствован из французского? Наверняка русские (ака монголы) не изобрели даже 2-х этажных зданий. А 3-х этажный мат изобретать горазды.

А "ярус" происходит от др.-сканд. jarðhús «жилище в земле, подвал, погреб, подземный ход».

А древние Укры сначала изобрели 2-х этажки. Второй этаж назывался "поверх". А потом 3-х этажки. Третий этаж назывался "поверхповерх". Или сокращенно "другий поверх". А когда изобрели хмарочоси, то их задолбало говорить "поверхповерхповерхповерхповерхповерхповерхповерхповерх..."
и поверхи начали просто считать по номерам, и номера все перепутались и "другий поверх" стал называться "3-й этаж". Так би и повбивав.
