Bizarre simplistic mathematical model states the obvious - that men should care more about their sisters’ children than their own.

If you are a man, and ignoring X/Y-chromosomes, your sister has 1/4 of alleles with both of your genes, 1/2 alleles with exactly one of your genes and 1/4 of alleles with zero of your genes. Your niece/nephew has 1/4*1+1/2*1/2+1/4*0=1/2 of alleles with exactly one of your genes, and 1/2 of alleles with zero of your genes.

Your own children will always have exactly one of your genes in every allele. But nobody knows for sure whether your "own" children have any of your genes or not. There is exactly 50/50 chances of either outcome (since your "own" child is always either yours or not yours), which exactly evens out the math-expectations, with equal risk, but less uncertainty for your niece/nephew, compared to your "own".

Duh.

Carbonated candy (газированые конфеты) "Pop Rocks" (sold 1975-1983) was made by melting its ingredients (sugar, lactose, corn syrup) in 40 atm. CO2, then cooling it, trapping tiny high-pressure bubbles inside the candy.

As early as 1979, rumors started that eating Pop Rocks and drinking cola would cause a person's stomach to explode.  The FDA set up a hotline to assure anxious parents that their children would not explode.  General Foods sent letters to school principals, created an open letter to parents, took out advertisements in major publications and sent the confection's inventor on the road to explain, as usual, that under capitalism, nobody wants their customers to explode. Nobody believed him. Clearly evil corporation was not to be trusted.

Pop Rocks are a part of 1970 nostalgia.

Best write-up I've ever seen of Watson-Crick-Franklin [-Wilkins-Gosling] affair.
Best write-up I've ever seen of Watson-Crick-Franklin [-Wilkins-Gosling] affair.

Watson and Crick published their proposed structure for DNA in April 1953 in Nature.  In the same issue, Franklin and Gosling their paper, and so did Wilkins, Stokes, and Wilson. Several more papers followed by the same groups over the next 2 months.

Watson-Crick-Wilkins shared 1962 Nobel Prize for Medicine.
Franklin died 5 years prior from cancer, aged 37.
