"Roadside Picnic" ("Пикник на обочине") is a science fiction novel by Arkady Strugatsky (1925-1991) and Boris Strugatsky (1933-2012), written in 1971, published in "Aurora" magazine in 1972. Was re-published for the first time in a book in an unmolested form in 1984. The only anti-Soviet content, delaying book publication was its quality.

IO9 ("We come from the future") has a good summary in English.

Velociraptor was very much like a Turkey from hell, about hip-high, weighted about as much as turkey (30lb).

Spielberg's "Velociraptor" from "Jurassic Park" (1993) is now called "Deinonychus antirrhopus", but in 1990, when Crichton's novel was written, it was still called "Velociraptor antirrhopus". It was about chest-high, and weighted about as much as a man (160lb).

The largest known bird-like dinosaur (Deinonychosaurian) was Utahraptor (identified in 1991 and named in 1993), about 7ft high, weighted 1100lb, about as much as a grizzly bear. The smallest known are Mahakala, Microraptor, Anchiornis, about knee-high, weighted about as much as chicken (2 lb).

Deinonychosaurians are the sister taxon to avialans, and therefore the closest relatives of avialan birds. Happy Thanksgiving.
