Memory evolved to help us predict the future, not recall the past (1).

This explains a lot.

For example "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" (2). But "those who could remember the past, but don't possess cognitive power to predict the future, are also condemned to repeat it", so they don't waste limited mental resources on remembering the past.

Or false memory isn't. It is the stored knowledge.
