1972 seems to be quite a fluctuation in the production of good movies, as we've noticed long time ago. Of course, there is some age bias. 1972 is old enough to produce "classics", but not so old as to be irrelevant. On the other hand, it did not repeat in either 1971 or 1973. Still, could be the usual Poisson stuff, can't tell without knowing the total number of good movies. The only other explanation is the release of PONG in 1972.

1971
Fiddler on the Roof
A Clockwork Orange

1972
Cabaret
The Godfather
Solaris
Sleuth
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie

1973
The Sting
Mean Streets
Jesus Christ Superstar

There must have been more in 1972. I only listed the movies we actually watched and loved.
