http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_Defined_Networking (SDN) is a network design concept in which the network control plane is logically or even physically decoupled from data forward plane, the two communicating via an API.

One such mechanism is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenFlow which is a standard interface for controlling computer networking switches, managed by the Open Networking Foundation. Version 1.1 was released on February 28, 2011 and version 1.2 in February 2012.

OpenFlow has been implemented by a number of network switch and router vendors including Brocade Communications, Arista Networks, Cisco, Force10, Extreme Networks, IBM, Juniper Networks, Hewlett-Packard, NEC, and HP.
