Betelgeuse (pronounced "Beetle-juice" (Бетельгейзе)) is a red supergiant star in Orion, 650 light years from Earth, has diameter of 5 astronomical units (about the size of Jupiter orbit). Except for the Sun, it has the largest angular diameter of any star, and is the easiest to resolve surface features on. Most recently, the best such image to date was achieved with an IOTA interferometer in Arizona and some fancy observing and processing. The resolution in the image below is 9 miliarcseconds (mas), while the whole star is 47 mas across.
