Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL) is a Lab is located in the town of Livermore (30 mi from where we live as crow flies) named after some Lawrence dude. It was co-founded by Edward Teller, who managed to piss off the whole Los Alamos National Lab (LANL) during the Manhattan Project (it was beneath him to work on the trivial implosion fission bomb) and got pissed at the whole LANL lab in return, because they were pooh-poohing his fusion bomb idea, even more so because it didn't work, as he proposed it at the time.

Creating a second nuclear weapons research lab also found government support in order to create competition for LANL. LLNL needed to differentiate themselves from LANL, so they focused on fusion bombs and miniature fission bombs.

Now miniaturization is at the new extreme. With National Ignition Facility (NIF) 1 Petawatt lasers, who needs fission primary.

How NIF Works
